LSE Department of International Development is an inter-disciplinary development institute located at the London School of Economics in London, United Kingdom. It was established in 1990 as the Development Studies Institute (DESTIN) to promote interdisciplinary postgraduate teaching and research on processes of social, political and economic development.
The department ranks among the most prestigious in the world with Quacquarelli Symonds ranking it the third best in the world. Research Excellence Framework ranks 81% of the departments as rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

Research and Facility
The departments research focuses on causes of poverty, social exclusion, economic stagnation, humanitarian crises and human security.
The department conducts research and teaching across six broad themes:
- Complex emergencies, security, and humanitarianism in war-torn societies
- Comparative and international politics of development
- Governance, civil society, and informal politics
- Development management
- Development economics
- The politics of global health
Professor Tim Allen heads the department and also serves as the professor of development anthropology. Combined the department is home to 32 full-time teaching staff, some of its notable facility members include Mayling Birney (PhD, Yale), Professor Catherine Boone (Ph.D, MIT), Professor Jean-Paul Faguet (PhD, LSE) and Tasha Fairfield (PhD, Berkeley).

Academic years are divided into three terms: Michaelmas (October to December), Lent (January to March) and Summer (April to June).

Launched in 2012, the program selects 50 students from Sub-Saharan Africa to "foster a new generation of African leaders."
Cumberland Lodge
International Development students attend a workshop at Cumberland Lodge, which is a spacious 17th century house set in the Windsor Great Park located 3.5 miles south of Windsor Castle.
